Anderson Silva: Spider Philosophy

i like the philosophical / spiritual feel to what he has to say.

A fighter needs to have love
For what he does.
He needs discipline in what he does.
Have order.
And have a vision of the progress of his work.

ANDERSON SILVA

I deeply believe in the martial arts philosophy.
And I practice a lot of my philosophy in the martial arts.
I bring that into my day to day life.
I bring it outside of the gym, in my children’s education.
To evolve my martial graduation more and more.
I take it very seriously.
The martial arts philosophy must be a part of every day,
In the training of all levels of athletes, as well as for beginners.
In the life of our students, and of our children.
I think it’s very important.

///

I think you should try, basically,
not to try to be better than everyone around you;
but try to be better than yourself every day.
Improving yourself.
Not only in fighting, but in your personal life as well.
Each day trying to be better than what you are.
That’s the first principle, right?
To have a great path throughout, not only in fighting but in life.
To be successful in your work and in your life, constantly bettering who you are.
That’s it.

I started training when I was 8 years old.
When I was 8, I was already getting kicked in the face.
Getting beat up by the big kids.
I was 8 years old but I was tall.
I was a trouble maker, I would tease the big kids.
I would get beat up in training, and I would cry.
They would say, “He aint coming back.” And I would always be there the next day.
In their face: “Do you want to beat me up? I want to see you try.”
Then I would get beat again. Of course.
I wanted to mess around with the big kids…
But while the big bullies didn’t want to learn, I wanted to learn.
While the big kids were beating everyone without learning,
I was learning.
Then I became gnarlier than the big kids
You must have a dragon hidden inside of you.
When you need, you let the dragon out.
Understand?

The brawl is a consequence.
First comes your safety.
First you achieve competence.
Use your talent, and believe in yourselves.
Things will happen.
But you have to believe nothing is impossible.
Nobody is here only to be a sparring partner.
You are not here to be anybody’s punching bag.
We are here to help each other. Without you I wouldn’t be the champion.
And with me you will get farther than without me.
So we’re here for each other. Some will go all the way, some won’t.
But if it’s what you want to do, and you believe in it; just keep believing in what you are doing.
Believe in us.
I’m not here to be better than anyone, and I’m not the owner of the truth.
But what I’m telling you comes from all the experiences I’ve had, which now I can pass on.
I will always be here to help you guys. We’re not here to beat each other up.
You’re not here only to serve as sparring partners for [us].
We are here for one another. Osss.
