ufc 92: quick predictions
just remembered there's a ufc tomorrow. i'm slippin. fuck.
nah, not relly. have had other interests lately. eh whatever.
griffin x evans: EVANS
forrest is a tough guy. but evans has better boxing and takedowns. and always pulls a win out of his ass. well, wouldnt say pulls it out of his ass. i mean he always finds a way to control the fight. sometimes its interesting, sometimes it isnt. but yeh. evans by decision.
nog x mir: NOG
come on man. not on the same level. ground or boxing. nog, son. that is all.
jackson x silva: SILVA
this is another "come on man, wtf" matchup. rampage is a nice guy and all. but he also looks to have replaced sak as wand's whipping boy. silva will beat down rampage jackson for the 3rd time 2mrrw nite.
the rest of the card... eh, dont really give a shit.

sticking it to the man!
was on call all week...
but looks like i got away w/o having to report for jury duty. yes!
but wait. they still got me.
see, i have to fill out paperwork and mail it in with their pre-adressed, non-postage paid envelope. so it was either come in on my own time or fork over cash to the gov for a stamp. bastards!
errr...i mean...i feel honored to have fulfilled my civic duty.

how bout that pacquiao?
"he can't handle your speed, son" - freddie roach to manny pacquaio btwn round 4 and 5
that pretty much sums it up.
pac man was quick and crisp and strong.
oscar looked old and slow. and by the 8th, mugged.
all de la hoya did was take punches to the head. terrible strategy, imo.
pacquiao was and is crazy good. but the one-sidedness was kinda surreal. i wonder if dlh threw the fight.

tuf 8 episode 11: the semi-finals
nover walked right through roop
nover is one of the only guys in the history of tuf that actually looks like he belongs in the ufc. so far no one has been as explosive or as impressive as him. on a side note, besides skill, athleticism, and killer instinct, he also interviews well. i get the feeling he's gonna prove to be a top contender at 155 in no time.
no wonder nog is gay for nover. just kidding.
vinny's got sick jiujitsu
one of the few people for whom it makes sense to pull guard.
glad he beat krysztof. i mean krystof was his teammate in real life and was conspiring against vinny with eliot from early on? gtfo with that shit.
blows my mind he thought he was gonna get past vinny. they're both pretty one-dimensional. vinny has jiujitsu. krysztof has standup. but vinny's bjj is 9000x better than krysztof's standup.
and that's how it played out in the semis. magalhaes reps jiujitsu well.
junie's an f-in nutcase
where to start with that guy?
junie's gotta sort those anger issues out. throwin glass again? wtf. sweet, poetic justice for efrain, the good guy, to finish junie, the punk. nothing says STFU better than a submission. d'arcy choke ftw.
dana obviously wants junie to have a place in the ufc. but if junie's strong point is his stand up striking, then i'm afraid he doesn't have much to offer. he's just another chris leben, a 20-something yo tank abbott for the add generation. i mean he got beat at his own game by a wrestler. btw, if either guy tried to stand up like that with nover (or anyone with decent standup), they'd be seein stars with the quickness.
junie n mir
it's so obvious those guys never kept it real. both tried to be controversial to get tv face time. mir with his ridiculous trollish comments, junie with, well, everything.
*vomits*

1st photo of Gambit from Wolverine
Gambit is a grungy, angst-ridden gen-Xer straight out the 90s.
This d-bag looks like a babyfaced metrosexual.
I am not amused.
Wolverine due out in theatres May 2009.
thats the thanksgiving spirit
i was on the elliptical at the gym this morning when this plumpish lady walked past me. she had a distinctly roundish physique and she was wearing a bright orange shirt. also, she smelled like pumpkin pie!!

Manny is a quiet person. He loves the fame, though, because he likes people. He likes having people around him all the time. If you go to his house at any given time there could be 30, 40 people there playing darts or singing karaoke. He wants to be around people. And he’s a very giving person. I’ve seen with my own eyes a crowd of people 20 or 30 deep in front of his house (in the Philippines) waiting for him to come out. If he’s in a good mood, he’ll give them something. If not, he won’t. At Christmas, he gives everybody food. I think he gives away something like five tons of rice. It’s unbelievable how much he gives away. He’s a very giving person. I say, “Manny, don’t give it all away.” I worry about that sometimes.... Manny is truly a nice guy, a good person, someone who puts a smile on your face. He makes you feel good. He smiles at you and you smile back....
Nov. 24, 2008
I think this [vs. De La Hoya] will be Manny's best performance. Until now, though, his best performance was his second fight with Erik Morales (in 2006). The first fight with Morales [in which Pacquiao was badly cut and lost a close, but unanimous decision] was a great fight. We made some mistakes, though, both him and I. That’s when we let a lot of Filipino people into the gym. We had 60, 70 people watching him workout. It motivated him to be around people; he liked it a lot. I realized it was a mistake, though. It was a distraction. For the second Morales fight, I closed the gym down completely. No fans, no spectators. Just Manny working. We got a lot more done; Manny was more focused. He was in the perfect mental state. He knew he got beat the first time and wanted to prove to his people that he could beat this guy in the rematch. He had his whole country on his shoulders. He was just determined to win that fight and look what happened; he knocked him out (in the third round). Without doubt, that was the best performance of his career. He was dominating. And remember: Morales was one of the greatest fighters of his era. He was only guy to beat Manny in a long, long time.
Nov. 22, 2008
The key to Manny Pacquiao’s success is his work ethic. He works his ass off. He had a tendency to play a little bit hard a couple of years ago. He was a rock ‘n roll singer in the Philippines all of a sudden. He did something like seven movies over there. And I’m sure there were more things he was doing that I didn’t hear about. When he walks through the door at Wild Card Gym, though, he’s always the same person; his work ethic is phenomenal. He averages 40 to 50 rounds a day; that’s a normal workout. He’ll do 14 rounds (hitting) the mitts with no rest period. He doesn’t want to rest. He’s nonstop. He constantly wants to learn, to get better. He picked me to be the guy to teach him. He came to America looking for a new trainer and a new promoter in 2001. He started on the East Coast, then came west. His last stop was Los Angeles before going home. Everyone turned him down. Top Rank, Golden Boy, Don Chargin, Don King, the New York promoters. They turned him down. No one thought this 112-pound champion at one time was worth anything. I worked one round with him on the mitts and thought, “Wow. This kid can fight.” I went to his manager and said, “You have a new trainer.” We’ve been friends ever since. A month later, Manny fought (then-IBF super bantamweight titleholder (Lehlohonolo) Ledwaba. Manny was a 4-1 underdog. I wanted to bet on him but no one was taking bets; the line was too big. We know what happened [Pacquiao TKO 6]. It’s that work ethic. It’s unbelievable.
Nov. 20, 2008
I think people are fascinated with the David and Goliath story of this fight. Can the David [Manny Pacquiao] really beat the Goliath [Oscar De La Hoya]? Big vs. small. The Mexican-American vs. The Mexican Assassin, although Manny hates to be called that even though he’s beaten so many Mexican fighters. And a lot of people will be pulling for Manny, including a lot of Mexicans. We’re going to walk to the ring that night with Julio Cesar Chavez, Antonio Margarito and Erik Morales on our side. I could name five more if I had my head on straight. They’ll all be in our corner because Manny fights like a true Mexican and Oscar doesn’t. He’s always struggled to have Mexicans on his side. I still say that’s why he chose Nacho (Beristain) to train him. By choosing a true Mexican trainer, he’s trying to get true Mexican fans on his side. It doesn’t seem to be working. He does have a lot of fans, though. I know that.
Nov. 18, 2008
The biggest challenge right now is dealing with (HBO television documentary series) 24/7 every day. With my hectic schedule – I have four fights before Manny fights Oscar -- 24/7 (crew) is here today. The gym is really busy. (Actor) Mickey Rourke came in to do a photo shoot during one of Manny’s workouts and it disrupted us a bit. He’s a friend of mine; I couldn’t throw him out. I just didn’t let it get in the way of what Manny had to do. And there’s a lot of press, a lot of questions. A lot of people are saying to Manny, “You can do it.” A lot are saying, “You’re crazy. You’re gonna get killed.” Everyone has an opinion … and we have to listen to all of them. When I hear someone say Manny is going to get knocked out, I have a tendency to want to argue with them but then I just say, “You’re entitled to your beliefs. You believe what you want to believe.” I try not to let it get to me but sometimes, on bad days, it does get to me a little bit. I do fire back sometimes. And it gets me in trouble sometimes. I’m trying to keep a clear gym, trying to keep Manny focused, so I threw two guys out of the gym. One is suing me for a million dollars. He said I hit him; he was laying on the ground saying I hit him. I got served (last week). It’s just part of a big fight (laughs). He’s got no case. At least I hope he’s got no case. This isn’t like a normal fight in a lot of ways. I had (Michael) Moorer when he fought (Evander) Holyfield for the heavyweight title and this is bigger. That was the biggest fight I’d ever been around presswise – until now.
Nov. 16, 2008
At first, I thought putting this fight together would be impossible because Manny and Oscar were in different weight classes. Then I started thinking about it. After I trained Oscar, I realized he had trouble with smaller guys and southpaws. Oscar sparred with Ivan Calderon, the former 105-pound champion, when I trained him for the Floyd Mayweather Jr. fight because I wanted someone real quick. Calderon slapped Oscar around like it was unbelievable. I said between rounds one time, “Oscar, I want you to hit him one shot to show him who’s boss.” He couldn’t do it. I got mad at him. I told him the same thing another time; we used Calderon for a couple of days. I said, “Go ahead and hit that little mother.” Again, he couldn’t do it. Calderon was too quick and had a southpaw stance, like Manny does. That’s when I thought of Manny. I knew then it was a winnable fight.

everything zen
physical activity combined with alone time helps me clear my mind and/or think things thru. always has.
when i was a kid i got it while surfing/bodyboarding at dawn. then i went thru a phase where i got it when i went on long distance runs. but i haven't done either in a long ass time; i have no desire to either. today i got it while i was finishing off a workout with moderate cardio.
w/o going into detail, havent worked out since tuesday, have plenty on my mind, havent been thinking straight lately, and came "this close" to burning lots of money last night and again this morning. now i see my judgement was cloudy. didnt realize i wouldve been burning $$$.
the intense workout before the cardio cleared my mind. the easy cardio gave me time to think.
end result: today's workout saved me money and stress, and left me feelin good physically and mentally.

De La Hoya - Pacquiao 24/7 Epidsode 1
Will the size difference matter? Age? Activity? Trainers?
Pac Man x ODLH. Dec 6.
Can't wait.
p.s. I never knew who Mickey Rourke was, till my old boxing trainer told me he trained him too. True story. To this day, I've only seen Rourke in Sin City.

i'd love to see machida x alves, but they're not even in the same wt class. durrr.
yeah, he's fighting thiago silva, someone i'm not at all familiar with. since alves just had a fight, thiago alves is in my memory bank and... shit gets mixed up and all thiagos are the same and... yeah.

quick ufc 91 predictions
lesnar vs couture: LESNAR
bad matchup for randy. lesnar is too big, too athletic, too good at wrestling and top position, and looks to have a huge reach advantage. couture's not gonna win with striking either from outside or from the tie up. couture's game is all about the tie up. but lesnar's fists and grappling skills are more than enough to nullify randy's clinch game. that, and lesnar is right about randy having trouble with defending from bottom against big grapplers. cases in point: couture/barnett and couture/ricco. oh..and those weigh-in pics. lesnar looks strong, couture looks weak. i think the unstoppable frate trane called brock lesnar starts picking up steam tonight.
the next 2 fights, i dont feel strongly about. i just think they'll probly boost my fight prediction record sooner. heh.
florian vs stevenson: FLORIAN
florian has the huge advantage in striking. plus florian is a cutter and joe is a bleeder. not good for joe. florian has the advantage on the ground. joes only real chance in this fight is to use his only advantage, takedowns, to put florian on his back and hold him there for a decision. i think florian can bring it back to the feet though and probably cut his way to victory.
bocek vs robertson: BOCEK
go kid red. theyre both grapplers. bocek, however, has a competition resume that lightyears more accomplished than robertson's. dont know much about robinson xcept his only losses have been against good bjj/sub guys, which kid red is. kid red's only losses have come from strikes, a style in which robertson does not xcel.

u never know what youll find on the internet
for an information whore like myself, the internet is pure awesome.
take today for example. i was researching some info on my area. one link lead to another, and before i knew it, i learn my brother (who lives nowhere near here) has been travelling all over the place competing in grappling tournaments, including the recent mundials. i didnt even know he trained!
amazing thing, this internet.

Lyoto Machida x Thiago Alves
Interesting article over at Tatame. These two who are facing each other in an upcoming UFC (not UFC 91), interviewed each other. The responses were level-headed and respectful.
Lyoto sums up my opinion when he says:
They are both great strikers slash skilled grapplers who like to throw down on the feet. Lyoto is easily by far the more technical, deliberate, and strategic of the two. But Alves is "technical enough," which combined with his aggression makes this a hard fight to predict. My gut says Lyoto by decision. But gambling on this match would be a gamble in the fullest sense of the word. If I had to put money on it, I would drop a few bucks on whoever is the underdog. But I wouldn't count on a payoff. Lol. Great matchup, should be a great fight.

You have your merits, if you were a bad athlete you wouldn’t be where you are. You’re a top level opponent… I wouldn’t say difficult, but a top level one. It’ll be a fight of unbeatable.
-- Thiago Alves
Lyoto sums up my opinion when he says:
I think the fight will be the synthesis of the modern MMA, will have everything: takedowns, striking and I think we’ll do everything that exists in MMA, and the fight might be a stand up one. I consider you a tough guy, but I think my technique is superior.

Upcoming Affliction and WEC cards
So I was at the gym today and some dude was wearing an Affliction shirt. Then I remember Vladdy was supposed to fight Lil Nog at the last one but the whole card got postponed...something about holding off for a Fedor/Arlovski fight or sumpin. Anyway, what a coincidence. Before it occurs to me to snoop around for info, I come across not only the Affliction card, but the WEC one as well.
Look at that Affliction card. Not bad.
The WEC card has some interesting stuff too.

tuf 8 episode 1 revisited
the preliminaries
seems like they have spots for certain character "types." like they'll have 2 guys who are kinda similar in some aspect and then match em up so that only 1 of those "types" ends up in the house.
eg, they had juni fight aguilar for the raging douchebag spot.
eg, they had nover fight duarte for the asian/islander striker spot.
i have no problem with that. i'm just sayin.
phillipe nover
find nover between 18:21 - 25:14
there's speculation in the mma world that dana was referring to nover when he said this season has a "24 year old lightweight anderson silva."
its possible. the guy doesnt remind me of silva during his prelim fight. but i will say that his attacks on the feet and the ground are clean and he's game from beginning to end. i'd have to see more, but its prbly him.
---
unrelated: last nights ufc
if i had bet, i wouldve made $1.20 on the dollar off the alves/koscheck fight. the oddsmakers putting alves at underdog really had it all wrong. he's a top contender for sure. only no one (except me) realized it till last night. the only way his showing couldve been better was if alves scored a ko. regardless, alves fucking rocked koscheck all night and it was glorious every single time.
unrelated: tuf 9 tryouts
a couple changes. for one, they switched it to ww and lw. for another, they are looking for a higher caliber of competitor. they are requiring all candidates to have at least 3 pro fights under their belts. so i guess the days of the jason thackers and wayne weems and eli whatshisnames ending up on the show are over. haha.

Koscheck vs Thiago Alves: Alves
thiago's better all around. has the skills to smash kos, but not vice versa.

stunts on top of elephants. thats wild!
elephant stampede @ 1:14; hand to hand starts @ 2:16
my first reaction was yeah teh action looks sick! but ytf they gotta put weapons and kung fu and crap in it?
but whateva. looks like the storyline involves integrating all arts, armed and unarmed, into a single system or something like that.
on a related note, my friend just returned from thailand and sent me like 600 pics of her trip. literally!

good weekend for mma
1. there's the local fights. wonder how much tix cost.
and then
2. there's the free ufc. gotta love it.
quick ufc predictions:
bisping vs leben: bisping
leben has improved a lot since his tuf days. but bisping has always had better technique, skills, and strategy. bisping by decision.
vera vs jardine: vera
interesting matchup. jardine is strong. but veras slicker, more fluid, more skilled. vera has looked lame in his last few fights but i think this can be an ez one for vera. but thats what i thought during his last fight. still, if i were betting, i'd put my money on vera. vera by ko if he unloads, by dec if he doesnt.
other matches
looks like gono is fighting, as is sokoudjou (sp?). dont know much about either one of their oppenents but lookin fwd to seein them as well.

fuckin joe son!
joe son is back in the public eye.
cuz he got arrested! dudes lookin at 275 to life for some prtty vile shit.
gang rape. sodomy. forced oral. gun.
wtf.
he originally made his mark in the early days of the ufc (early 90s) thumpin his bible while kimo carried that cross to the octagon (LOL). and for his own style of "joe son do" (LOL) that he used against keith hackney only to submit from punches to the nuts (LOL).
then he resurfaced (late 90s) at some underground card downtown (i think i was there) in which he basically ran the whole fight and got his ass whoopped. yeah i think i was there.
then he somehow got a spot in the big show. pride. came to the ring in fucking speedos. at a time when fighters had long abandoned speedos for boardshorts, vale tudo shorts, and other less faggy shit. LOL.
then he got a role in austin powers (cool).
then he had some hard times. or so they say. mental illness and drugs dont mix. mmmmmk?
then he got busted for some fucked up shit he did in 1990.
the end.

"Austin Powers" Star Charged in Gang Rape
Posted Oct 9th 2008 8:22PM by TMZ Staff
TMZ has learned the actor who played Random Task in the first "Austin Powers" movie has been charged with a vicious gang rape.
Joe Son's arrest has been all over newspapers in the O.C., but no one connected the dots -- that the suspect is actually Dr. Evil's henchman -- until now.
Here's how it all went down. Son pleaded guilty back in May to felony vandalism. The plea required him to fork over a DNA sample. Investigators ran his sample and found Son's DNA connected him to an unsolved gang rape back in 1990, where a woman was pistol-whipped, raped, threatened with death and eventually blindfolded and released naked.
Son has been charged with five felony counts of rape, two felony counts of forcible sodomy, two felony counts of sodomy in concert by force, seven felony counts of forcible oral copulation, and one felony count of sexual penetration by foreign object by force.
Son faces a maximum sentence of 275 years to life if convicted.

Joe Son Arrested on 1990 Gang Rape Charge
Friday, October 10, 2008
by Loretta Hunt (lhunt@sherdog.com)
Joseph Hyungmin Son -- better known as UFC veteran Joe Son to diehard MMA fans -- was arrested Oct. 7 in Huntington Beach, Calif., on charges related to a 1990 Christmas Eve gang rape. Son, who was already in custody for an unrelated vandalism charge, was linked to the 1990 crime when he gave a DNA sample to authorities following a probation violation. A second assailant tied to the 1990 crime is still at large.
TMZ.com and the Orange County Register were the first to report Son’s arrest.
Son has been charged with five felony counts of forcible rape, two felony counts of forcible sodomy, two felony counts of sodomy in concert by force, seven felony counts of forcible oral copulations, one felony count of sexual penetration by foreign object by force, and sentencing enhancements for kidnapping to commit sexual assault, personal use of a firearm, use of a firearm during a sex offense, and great bodily injury to sexual assault victim.
If convicted, the 39-year-old Son faces a maximum sentence of 275 years to life in prison. He is being held on $1 million bail.
Son, along with a second suspect, is accused of dragging the victim into the back of a car, pistol whipping her, threatening her life at gun point while he counted the bullets in his gun, and raping, sodomizing, and forcing her to orally copulate him repeatedly, according to a release from the Orange County District Attorney’s Office. Son is also accused of sexually penetrating the victim with his firearm before she was released naked with her pants tied around her eyes.
Son, who was submitted by Keith Hackney at 1994’s UFC 4 after being struck in his groin repeatedly, is also remembered for his dramatic entrances in which he dragged a large wooden stake to the cage on his back. He also briefly stood in as Kimo Leopoldo’s manager at UFC 3, and later earned the role of Random Task in Mike Meyer’s 1997 blockbuster film “Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery.”
After an embarrassing 54-second loss at the Pride’s short-lived “The Best” series in 2002, a Speedo-clad Son retired from competition with a record of 0-4.

scrambled eggs n tofu
y the hell not?
good source of protein n calcium. easy on the calories, the taste buds, the stomach, and the pocketbook. fry in canola oil, then also a good source of unsat fats.
only thing is i'd probably want to add a fruit/veggie in there. perhaps tomato, mushroom, pepper, onion, or something.
ahhh the source of my inspiration. its some vegan chicks version of scrambled eggs. xcept she used crumbled tofu instead of eggs and some complicated vegan thing for ham. haha fuck that.

These assholes based in Las Vegas call my cell phone at least twice a day. If they think I'll do any fucking business with them or give them any positive word of mouth, they're out of their minds. Why would I do that when they are such a pain in my ass?
Nope, I'm putting it out there that they are CERTIFIED FUCKTARDS.
Fuck 'em.

palin biden debate
palin's irrelevant non-answers = chewbacca defense
eg, what question was she answering here?
this kind of wtf empty chatter reminds me of nursing school...
...and the chewbacca defense:
fast fwd to 1:30
palin's strategy was simple: look directly into camera, smile, praise mccain, then say whatever the hell you want about the general subject of the question while ignoring the actual question entirely. oh and dont forget to throw in a wink here and there.
cant wait to see tina fey's take on SNL.
dear terrorists,
if mccain and palin win the election, please do not assasinate mccain. as commander in chief, ms. hockey mom will surely end the u.s.
thanks,
j

peter schiff and common sense...for the win
recession, mortgage crisis, and more predicted back on 8/26/06.
the other guy, art laffer, who turned out to be terribly wrong, is someone you might read about when studying upper division macroeconomics, particularly supply-side and/or keynesian economics. laffer's ideas about interest rate reductions as stimulus for increased tax revenue play a big role in trickle-down economics.
dude's gotta feel like a failed economist right about now.
summary:
schiff = win
laffer = epic fail

I'm not political but I find this whole soccer-mom-who-wants-to-run-the-country thing kinda funny.
To quote Matt Damon, "It's like a really bad Disney Movie....The hockey mom...and she's facing down Vladimir Putin using the folksy stuff she learned at the hockey rink."

cheeseburger w/ chocolate covered bacon
The general blueprint for the Brooklynite, our trial creation, is simple in that it is based around high quality beef, cheese, lettuce and buns. Of course, to really raise this dish to the level of true Epicness, we added a small, but significant twist: the burger would be topped with chocolate-covered crispy bacon. Many will initially scoff at the idea of adulterating strips of salty bacon with a sweet and creamy coat of milk chocolate (indeed, we had our initial doubts), but we believe that after reading our notes and seeing these mouth-watering culinary treasures, you will be convinced to garnish your next burger similarly.
bacon cheeseburger w/ glazed donuts for buns - i get.
bacon cheeseburger with chocolate covered bacon? thats just insane.

has tuf 8's biggest douche already been eliminated?
in the 1st episode? b4 even making it to the house?
as if that werent douchey enough...
the guy quit after the first round of his fight in the prelims. he eliminated himself after all that douche talk.
wtdouche?
to his credit, he had no chance. in effect he saved himself from getting even more of an assbeating. also, it looks like he has technical competence on the ground. but then again, he wasnt able to use in in a way useful for a fight. so his one redeeming quality cancels itself out. kinda like how he cancelled himself out the show.
…to be honest, dude, I belong with Napoleon dawg. Alexander, dude, Hitler. That’s where I belong. I be conquering mother**kers, dude, period. Pillaging, sh*t like that….that’s where I belong, bro. Criminal dawg, straight up criminal.
